Ertugrul Gazi, father of Osman Gazi the founder of the Ottoman empire is a figure about whom not much is known or I should say not much was known untill this series called Dirilis Ertugrul aired on TRT.
Osman I is considered to be the founder of the Ottoman empire but I guess it would not be wrong to say that it was Ertugrul Gazi who ignited the spark of supremacy among the Turkish tribes.
I know it's not proper to take a tv series as a source of history but, the major events like the dominion of Ertugrul and his tribe over Sögut and a few more events shown in Dirilis Ertugrul are somewhat accurate.
My own opinion
My own opinion about Ertugrul Gazi is that he was the one who actually laid the foundation of an empire and Osman I followed the path of Ertugrul Gazi resulting in the foundation of the Ottoman empire.
Historians may differ and they might be correct in their differences but, as a person who has watched the series Dirilis Ertugrul and read a few books about the Ottoman history I would say, Ertugrul Gazi was the actual person who inspired Osman I in achieving his endeavours.

Too less is known about Ertugrul Gazi as compared to other Ottoman figures. Ertugrul Gazi was an excellent administrator and a brilliant fighter who fought for justice.
"Stand with the oppressed, even if he's your enemy" this quote from Ertugrul Gazi gives us an idea about his love for justice and his commitment towards his faith.
Ertugrul Gazi for me, is the untold hero and I guess, many people will share this thought.
